The stylist secret to fall outfits

by Paul Julch

I share a lot of style advice (obviously). But there’s something that I get asked about all the time - because it feels elusive to a lot of people. And it’s actually a really useful concept to grasp, no matter where you are on your style journey.

Because it’s the style advice that you can use in almost every season (it even works when it feels like you’re in two different seasons in one day). It’s what so many people want to do better. It adds interest to your outfits. It’s something you can do in a very straightforward way - or you can get super creative.

It’s layering. And it’s something I show clients how to do all the time, because it’s a great way to get more mileage out of your wardrobe. So, if you haven’t played with layers (or you’re just out of practice), check out why it’s so useful & read some principles that you can apply to so many of your outfits.

The same skirt layered for early fall (with a t & light jacket) and later in the season (with a sweater & suede jacket).

There are a few simple reasons why layering is such an important style concept - both practical & aesthetic.

On the practical side:

  • Layering makes sense any time of year when the weather changes throughout the day (think early spring or early fall). Or when you go from cold outside to hot inside (or the other way around).

  • Layers keep you warm. Layers trap air in between them - so a t-shirt & a sweater might actually be warmer than a heavier sweater.

  • Layering makes your clothes more versatile. The button-down shirt that’s an outer layer (over a tank) in the summer is an inner layer (under a sweater) in the fall.

On the aesthetic side - layering adds dimension & interest to your outfits. And it allows you to create compelling looks that are much more than the sum of their parts…
