The boots I recommend every fall

by Paul Julch in the obsession

A recent comment on Instagram basically inspired this article. It was, “what shoes are we wearing this fall?” Which made me reflect on recent client conversations about creating a basic shoe wardrobe for the season. Because, even though fall rolls around every year, you might feel perplexed as to what shoes to wear - especially with different pant fits & skirts & dresses.

So, here are the basic shoes that I’m suggesting to clients right now - along with the boots I recommend every fall (plus even more things you should know about boots).

Shoe & boot picks from recent shopping sessions.

Ok, first things first - what should be in your basic shoe wardrobe? If you know me, this next part is not unexpected - there are no ‘shoulds’. Because your shoe wardrobe depends on your style & your lifestyle. But here’s what I’ve been showing my clients who are essentially building a fall shoe wardrobe from the ground up:

Simple sneakers. Loafers. Boots.

If we’re choosing 3-4 pairs to get started, this is where we begin. I select simple sneakers (generally white or off-white) because they’re the most versatile. And they’re distinctly not a workout sneaker, so they function as a more elevated option.

I pick loafers because, like sneakers, they work with or without socks. And also like sneakers, they’re cute with jeans & pants - and they’re having a moment with socks & skirts/dresses. If you don’t love loafers as much as I do, I still recommend being practical & not thinking you’ll go sockless when it gets really cold - so you may skip loafers & head straight to boots. (I also love lace-up oxfords for fall, but they’re harder to find for women. But don’t forget - you can always look at men’s options.)

And then the boots I choose depend on my client’s style, needs, etc. I find the most practical boot to be a flat-ish simple zip or chelsea-style boot as an everyday option. And then for something dressier (or for certain pants or clients who just want it), a heeled boot. But no matter which style or vibe of boots my clients are looking for, there’s one part I always recommend…
