COLORED KHAKIS
In honor of Father's Day, our good friend Sonia Cole did a photoshoot with me and my younger son, Adam. We had a really fun day, and got some great shots showing the versatility of a denim jacket at any age.
Denim jacket, sweater and khakis - a no brainer outfit, right? Add colored khakis, and it all gets a little more interesting.....
You can go two ways with these items - casual with sweater and sneakers, or dressed up with a dress shirt, cardigan and lace-ups. Guess which way Adam chose?
Whether you're wearing sneakers or lace-ups, navy shoes are super useful. Navy sneakers have more depth than the expected white ones, and navy suede shoes go with more than you may think.
On Adam: Denim jacket, yellow t-shirt by Gap. Striped sweater by H&M. Green khakis by J Crew. Navy sneakers by Nike.
On Paul: Denim jacket by Gap. Blue/khaki plaid shirt, oatmeal cardigan by Banana Republic. Blue 5-pocket pants, brown belt by J Crew.

SHORTS
A denim jacket is the ideal grab-on-the-way-out-the-door layering piece when you're not sure if you need one. Throw it in the back seat of the car or shove it in your backpack - it will be there when you need it.
It's always good to have some fun sneakers, especially in the summer. Adam's striped ones or my navy and white ones are just as versatile as solids, but definitely waaay spunkier.
On Adam: Denim jacket by Gap. Red short-sleeve henley, camouflage-print shorts by J Crew. Khaki belt by American Eagle. Red/white striped sneakers by Generic Surplus.
On Paul: Denim jacket, t-shirt by Gap. Grey crewneck sweater, blue/green colorblock shorts by J Crew. Blue/white sneakers by Onitsuka Tiger.

SHIRT AND TIE
Didn't think a denim jacket would work with a shirt and tie? Guess again!
In Adam's look, the denim jacket helps pull it together - sort of a stand in for a blazer or cardigan, it acts as that pivotal "third piece" that makes an outfit feel complete. In my look, the denim jacket helps "casual-ize" a bowtie and dress pants, while still feeling completely appropriate.
Adam loves his purple Vans. He definitely likes color, and isn't shy about it!
My tasseled loafers are the ideal summer dress shoe. Inherently less dressy than lace-ups, loafers are extra versatile when they work with or without socks.
On Adam: Denim jacket by Gap. Blue/white striped button-down by Old Navy. Blue/purple horizontal stripe tie, brown belt by J Crew. Brown khakis by Gap. Purple sneakers by Vans.
On Paul: Denim jacket by Gap. Grey v-neck sweater by Banana Republic. Blue mini-check button-down, blue lightweight wool trousers, brown belt by J Crew. Plaid bowtie by The Men's Store at Bloomingdales. Brown tassel loafers by To Boot New York.
