Summer isn’t over yet! I’ll say that again – summer is not over yet. But I know it may feel that way. Your kids are already back in school (or going soon) and Labor Day is basically next week. But according to the calendar and the weather, summer is still here for another 4 weeks – and even longer, depending on where you live.
But you may have hit a point with your summer style that you’re kind of ready for fall. You’re getting tired of wearing the same warm weather pieces day after day. But guess what? There are probably some of your favorite summer styles that you haven’t even worn yet (or worn enough!). A few things that you truly love to wear in summer may still be sitting in your closet. And there’s still time.
So, here are 4 quick steps to wear your summer favorites before cooler weather arrives. Because the last thing you want to do when you’re changing your closet over to fall is to see a few of your most treasured summer pieces and think, “darn, I forgot to wear this!”
PICK THEM OUT
This may sound super simple – but if there are summer items that you truly love, that you haven’t worn yet (or would like to wear more), go into your closet and pick them out. Find that flirty dress, those fun wedges and the super cute top that you bought pre-pandemic. Grab anything and everything that you’d regret not wearing before summer ends. And read this for my quick list of summer favorites.
PUT THEM SOMEWHERE VISIBLE
So, now that you’ve selected your summer favorites, you have to be sure you don’t forget about them. The easiest thing to do is put them somewhere visible. And that depends on your closet space.
Visible can mean the front of your closet. Or a valet hook that pokes out of your hanging bar. Or the coatrack that sits outside of your closet. Basically, I mean putting these items anywhere that you’ll see them on a regular basis, to keep them top of mind.
MAKE SOME OUTFITS
One of the biggest reasons that you may not be wearing a few of your favorite styles is that they’re not easy to create outfits with. So, when you’re scrambling to get on your first morning Zoom call or running out the door for last minute dinner plans, these probably aren’t the things that you choose. So, the solution to that is to create some outfits.
And no, you don’t have to do a full on styling session like I do with clients. But you can do something similar. Take your favorite styles, lay them on your bed and figure out what you’re wearing them with (this may or may not entail trying things on). And then snap a photo - so the decision of what goes with what is already made.
And when you actually wear the outfit, take a selfie and save it to a file in your phone. So, you get into the habit of recording favorite outfits to wear again (especially for days when you’re just not motivated to create a brand new outfit). DECIDE TO WEAR THEM
This also may sound super simple, but making the decision to wear something is often the biggest obstacle you can overcome. Think about it – when you’re getting dressed and pondering what to wear, you’ll often engage in some self-talk. Thoughts of, “that’s too dressy” or “I need a strapless bra with this” or “can I wear it to a backyard barbecue” run through your head. But if the item is truly one of your favorite styles, skip the back and forth and just decide to wear it. Because if it makes you feel good, then it works.
