THE FIND: Vacation inspiration

by Paul Julch in the find

You can find inspiration anywhere.  Recently I had the incredible experience of a trip to Greece and Turkey - a phenomenal vacation that I'll remember forever.  I took a bunch of photos while I was on the trip, and was truly inspired by what I saw.  Once I got home, I looked back at all my pictures - and I realized that several of them were great inspiration for some style lessons.  Because it all comes back to personal style, right?

POP OF COLOR

I ran into this girl on the island of Santorini.  We were making our way to lunch, and she was waiting to be picked up.  I was struck by her simple, neutral outfit (white dress, denim jacket, straw hat) and then the bold pop of her yellow suitcase.  Lesson to be learned?  Even if you love neutrals, a pop of color never hurt anyone.

GET THE BLUES

Immediately after seeing yellow suitcase girl, we wandered into a hotel lobby and came upon this scene.  I was enthralled by the tight color palette and the ranges of blues that we saw all throughout Greece, echoed by this amazing lobby.  Lesson to be learned?  Even if you don't "do" color, try different shades of blue.  Blue is one of those colors with so many facets, that you'll be sure to find a shade you love.

HIDDEN TREASURE

We spent one afternoon on the island of Rhodes - just wandering shops, checking out a museum, and having the best seafood lunch.  Down an alleyway was this adorable colored staircase, tucked amongst all the stone colored buildings.  Lesson to be learned?  You never know where you'll find something unexpected - so check out a new store or stop into that shop that you pass by all the time - you might be surprised.

STYLISH ALL THE TIME

While visiting historic sites in Istanbul, I noticed this girl wearing a unique quilted jacket.  The rest of her outfit was simple - denim skinnies and navy and ivory ballet flats.  But among the throngs of sweatshirted, practical sneaker-wearing touritsts, she stood out.  Lesson to be learned?  You can be comfortable and stylish almost all the time – it just takes a little effort.

RAINBOW

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is an exciting, overwhelming place.  Sights, smells, and above all – colors.  This is just one of the booths that had an amazing color display of it’s wares.  Lesson to be learned?  Embrace vibrant color.

MAKE IT YOUR OWN

We encountered this wall while wandering through Istanbul.  It’s made up of broken pieces of pottery, which may have otherwise been tossed, but someone pulled it together into this amazing statement.  Lesson to be learned?  Take what you’re given, but make it your own.  So if you see a long sleeve shirt, but you’d prefer shorter sleeves – take it to a tailor and chop them off!
