THE INTERSECTION: Party shoes

Shoes can make or break an outfit - and they also can be perfect (or less than ideal) for a specific occasion.  New Years' Eve is looming, and if you're heading out (or staying in) you'll need to keep your feet firmly planted in the right shoes as we usher in 2014.  Here are some selections (and a few splurges) for her and him that will help you kick up your feet in style

FANCY SCHMANCY

Is a formal affair on the agenda?  Then go all out - a pair of glitter sandals for her, and a pair of tux loafers for him.  Tonight you can definitely refer to yourselves as "fancypants".

What we'd put with this: For her - a jewel-toned ankle length full skirt gown.  For him - a traditional black tux.

Champagne Glitter Fabric Sandals by Jimmy Choo, $695 | Patent Leather Slippers by John Lobb, $980

COCKTAIL COOL

Heading to (or hosting) a nice cocktail party?  Then dress shoes are still the plan - just a few notches down from formal.  Sexy suede heels for her and shiny cap toes for him are the obvious choice.

What we'd put with this: For her - a matching ivory lace top and skirt.  For him - navy suit, windowpane plaid shirt, solid tie.

Asymmetric Suede Heels by Zara, $69.99 | Leather Oxford Shoes by Maison Martin Margiela, $795

BARHOP

Does the night entail visits to a couple of bars before or after dinner?  Then boots are good for everyone!

What we'd put with this: For her - black skinnies, black tank, killer black/white print blazer.  For him - darkwash jeans, chocolate leather jacket, navy turtleneck.

Geometric Ankle Boots by Nicholas Kirkwood, $1280 | Blue Chelsea Boots by Ferragamo, $795

PIZZA PARTY

Ordering pizza and seeing if the kids can make it to midnight?  Then comfort is key - she gets loafers that slip right off, and he gets sneakers for that late-night run to the store.

What we'd put with this: For her - boyfriend jeans and a cozy sweater.  For him - grey cargo pants, striped sweater, denim jacket.

Jacquard Slipper Loafers by Stella McCartney, $341 | Jack Purcell Sneakers by Converse, $60

NAPTIME

If staying up until midnight is not on the to-do list, then cozy up on the couch, put in a movie and welcome the new year tomorrow.

What we'd put with this: For both - pajamas!

Cashmere Multistripe Socks by Corgi for J. Crew, $98 | Cashmere Socks by Richard James for J. Crew, $87.50
