A few weeks ago, I did an ‘ask me anything’ on Instagram stories & this question came up: “It’s hot in my area until well into Oct. Can I still wear my bright colored summer clothes then?” My short answer was (& still is) “YES!” And my long answer is basically this article 😉
Because here’s something that I say every year at this time - colors aren’t seasonal, fabrics are seasonal. There is no color that only makes sense at a specific time of year & there is no color that you can’t wear at any time of year. And I have this conversation relatively often. I have one client who only wore her red & burgundy pieces in late November & December. I have another client who only wore a green sweater at the holidays & on St. Patrick’s Day.
So, back to the original question of, “can I still wear my brightly colored clothes in October?” If you want to feel more seasonally appropriate, look at your color pairings. Some light & bright colors may feel specifically summer (especially with white). But you can pair the same colors with more subdued neutrals to take them right into fall.
And since the last article I wrote about color pairings (7 years ago!) was so well received, I figured it was time for a new one. So, whether you want to wear your warm weather pieces into the cooler season - or you want to channel fall vibes right now - here are 10 of my favorite combinations to wear from summer into fall.
But before I get to the color combos, here are a few things to remember. First - I don’t know why, but I decided to use each color only once in these pairings (apparently I like a challenge). But you can mix your favorite light & bright colors with many of these neutrals. Second - this is intended to motivate you to get more wear out of what you already have (so, don’t go on a color buying spree). Third - these images are from quick Pinterest searches (& I wanted the individual colors to stand out). So, your outfits can play with much more print & texture & detail.
1️⃣ PINK & OLIVE

I think I need to write this on a (olive colored) t-shirt: Olive is a neutral. Even I get in the habit of pairing olive just with other neutrals, but olive works with everything. It’s an expected combination with orange & burgundy for fall - but I love it with shades of pink (everything from pastel to magenta) for something a little less common…
